For many years Khaptad Baba lived here discovering many medicinal herbal plants. The national park with its 224 species of medicinal herbs is described as a living herb garden. It currently harbours 567 varieties, comprising 11 per cent of all Nepal's flowering plants. The hills are dominated with magnificent subtropical Chir pine forest at lower altitudes, and subalpine fir, hemlock, oak and rhododendron plantations in the higher regions. During the spring and summer, the meadows are lined with a mass of flowers. With 270 species of birds, the park provides outstanding bird-watching facilities, the common ones being Impeyan pheasant, partridges, flycatchers, bulbuls, cuckoos and eagles. Khaptad National Park is also home to a rich range of wildlife such as barking deer, wild boar, Himalayan black bear, yellow-throated marten, rhesus macaque and langur monkey. The Khaptad Lake and the spectacular view of the Api and Saipal Himal range are of special interest to the visitors.
