Shey Phoksundo Trek

Nepal's largest territorial area, Dolpo is certainly a glorious and magnificent place. The tropical sights and natural sceneries draw tourists from all over the country, making this place a must-visit. The Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek takes you to the hypnotic deep-blue and emerald hues of Nepal's largest lake, Phoksundo Lake. Phoksundo is an alpine freshwater lake often considered holy by Buddhist and Bon-Po religious followers, making the trek an amazing mix of nature and culture. The village of Ringmo lies on the southern bank where you can get a special close look at the local Bonpo culture. The monastery of Tshowa on the east side of Phoksundo Lake is another highlight of this trek. Our destination Phoksundo Lake lies within Shey Phoksundo National Park. Therefore, many endangered animals such as the snow leopard, musk deer, blue horse, great Tibetan horse, Himalayan tahr etc, can be found. The Phoksundo Lake Trek passes through scenic woods, dense pine forests and picturesque ancient villages with breathtaking views of majestic mountains capped in snow. The rivers and waterfalls on the road are among the most beautiful scenes in Nepal. Spring and Fall are the perfect trekking season. When time permits it is worth a day or two to enjoy the scenery, visiting the lake and surrounding areas.

Day 2: Sightseeing in Kathmandu and preparation day for the trek.

The very next morning, after breakfast you will leave for a full day sightseeing tour around Kathmandu valley. You can visit the sacred Pashupatinath Temple and Swyambhunath, very ancient and essentially enlisted in UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The biggest Buddhist Stupa at Boudhanath and the fine arts and historical architecture of Kathmandu Durbar Square reflecting the ancient Nepalese culture which is the highlights of our guided tour.

A visit to Patan City will enchant you with its famous fine arts and historical architecture. On return to your hotel, you will have time to explore the local area, have dinner and perhaps take a leisurely stroll through the famous streets. Finally, day ends with a Authentic Nepalese Dinner in Nepali Cultural Restaurant.

Day 3: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (150m)

From Kathmandu we take a flight on any domestic carrier to Nepalgunj. Nepalgunj, a town in the western Terai & is very close to the Indian border and the Bardia Nationl Park. It is a major transport hub for western, mid-western and far-western regions of Nepal. Overnight at hotel.

Day 4: Fly from Nepalgunj- to Juphal & trek Dunai (2140m)

Today we take a 35 minutes flight to Juphal. Our trekking starts from Juphal .The trail descends and winds through local villages. Its not that far from Juphal to Dunai, but remember you have just landed at 2475m. From Juphal the trails heads southeast, at first high above the deep valley of Thulo Bheri, then Kalagaonda and then Rupgad. Dunai is quite a large centre with a district hospital, paved streets and one recognisable lodge.

Day 5: Trek from Dunai to Chhepka (2838m)

The path climbs steadily for most of the day, with some exposed rock-cut section high above the bubbling turquoise water of dancing Suli Gad Khola. The upriver trail is mostly through shrubs and on precipice mostly exposed to the morning sun. At Kageni cross a wood bridge and continue uphill on the left above 150 feet of Suli. Above, all is bleak and rocky. The one-house, grassy field village of Shyanata is attained and not far up is Chhepka. We will stay overnight there at Chhepka.

Day 6: Trek from Chhepka to Rechi (2940m)

The trails today are quite exposed but not enough to deter most people. Overall it’s a pleasant day with bags of anticipation. The trekking begins along the riverbank on a log-supported path and then passes through a rocky gorge. The trail is wider and mostly along the river bank. In the mornings the damp dark soil often captures footprints of larger mammals, primates, and horned herbivores. The village of Rechi is reached where we stay overnight there.

Day 7: Trek from Rechi to RingmoGaon (3733m)

This is a shorter day, but there is an altitude gain of 650m to be negotiated beside one of the most dramatic waterfalls in the country. Leaving Rechi the canyon narrows with drama to match the expectations of reaching the fabled lake at Ringmo. The trails climbs to the yak-filled meadows of Ringmo. Ringmo has a clutch of basic lodge/homestays. The lake is truly stunning.

Day 8: Acclimatization day

Today we explore the area around the magnificent Phoksundo Lake. The lake is famous for its magnificent turquoise color and spectacular scenery. Ringmo village, which is a typical Tibetan village, is scenically nestled in the area. Many beautiful glaciers can be found near and above the lake area. There are many monasteries (Gompas )and Bon-po religious sites at the park and we spend our time visiting some of them. The most famous, Shey Gompa was established in the 11th Century. Thashung Gompa located near Phoksundo Lake was built about 900 years ago. We also explore the wonderful natural sites and enjoy our nature tour.

After an enjoyable and insightful visit we trek to Sangta. We stay overnight at the hotel.

Day 10: Trek from Shyanta to Juphal
