Langtang Ganja-La Pass Trek

Langtang Ganja La Pass trek, specially designed off the beaten trail that highlights the Langtang Region of Nepalis and descendant of the Tibetan origin, still look like Tibetans. These treks are adventurous and unique than other trekking in Langtang region. Langtang Ganja La pass trekking offers panoramic Himalayan views of beautiful Langtang valley and Helambu valley. Ganja la pass trek follows the alpine forests, rich flora and fauna and high altitude pastureland. The attraction of the Langtang region is it’s closeness to Kathmandu and yet it’s as wild as any Tibetan highlands. The northern parts of the area mainly fall within the boundaries of Langtang National Parks. The main ethnic groups here are Sherpa and Tamang whose religious practices, languages and dress are much similar to those of Tibet. The forests in this region have moderate temperate, subalpine vegetation and diverse wildlife.

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, our company representative will meet and welcome you to Nepal and then you'll be transferred to your confirmed hotel. Later you will be accompained by the office staff for a short tour of Thamel to make you familiar with some good restaurants, ATMs, money changer and other necessary places you might need during your stay in Thamel.

The very next morning, after breakfast you will leave for a full day sightseeing tour around Kathmandu valley. You can visit the sacred Pashupatinath Temple and Swyambhunath, very ancient and essentially enlisted in UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The biggest Buddhist Stupa at Boudhanath and the fine arts and historical architecture of Kathmandu Durbar Square reflecting the ancient Nepalese culture which is the highlights of our guided tour. A visit to Patan City will enchant you with its famous fine arts and historical architecture. On return to your hotel, you will have time to explore the local area, have dinner and perhaps take a leisurely stroll through the famous streets. Finally, day ends with a Authentic Nepalese Dinner in Nepali Cultural Restaurant.

After morning breakfast we drive out along the north-western hills of Kathmandu for about 7-8hours drive. You will witness lovely scenery of white snowcapped mountains like Mt. Annapurna II, Manasalu, Ganesh Himal and other minor peaks along the route and as well as the green landscape of hillock, rivers, and village. Enjoy the Himalayan views and lifestyle through the terraced fields and rustic villages. The scenery of foothills and ridgeline vistas goes through the Trishuli Bazaar, Betrawati and Dhunche you feel as if you are heading towards low land. We take our Lunch at the Trishuli Bazaar before continuing further to Dhunche. We descend to Syabrubesi for the overnight stay.

Today our trail continues down the ridge until we come to the east that drops sharply off the ridge and through a dense forest. Trail starts meandering through the cool deciduous forests of oak and maple that cover the lower sections of the valley and climbs through massive stands of spruce, fir and blue pine. Towering walls close in and our paths will skirt precipitous drops, which fall into a silt-laden river below. Cross a bridge (1960m) over a tributary of the Langtang Khola and then climbs up from the river and in an hour, shortly after the trail levels off, we join the old Langtang trail from Sherpa Gaon and Syabrubesi. Another hour from this trail junction brings us to the Lama Hotel in the tiny village of Chon gong. Overnight at Tea house. 6-7 hours walk.

The day starts with a gentle climb, but it soon becomes steeper, climbing through wild forests of hemlocks, oaks, maples and white and pink rhododendrons high above the Langtang Khola. The tantalizing glimpse of snow-capped peaks starts appearing along with the short view of Mt. Langtang Lirung (7244m) through the trees. The trail leads to a log bridge and on climbing further we come across lush meadows of Ghora Tabela (2992m). The trail ascends gradually as the valley opens up into classical U-shaped glacial. Follow the path across the helipad and yak pastures, climb briefly through rhododendrons and scattered Tamang villages. The trail crosses a stream and climbs past several water-driven mills and prayer wheels to the large settlement of Langtang (3430m), headquarter of Langtang National Park. The village has flat-roofed Tibetan style house, and elaborately carved driven windows of the upper village are worth exploring. Valley is surrounded by stone walls enclosing fields where buckwheat, potatoes, wheat, turnips, and barley are planted and easy to find yak and the wild goats wondering around you. 4-5 hours trek.

The trail onward from Langtang  climbs through increasingly rugged country through the small yak-herding village of Mundu, Sindum and Yampha, eventually tracing the path of Langtang Khola to Kyanjin Gompa (3870m). It is a short trek of about 3 hours with the views on mountains and snow covered peaks. In the afternoon, you can explore Yak Cheese Factory. The fantastic views of natural landscape and mountains are impressive.

Today is the rest and exploration day of the trekking. We visit the monastery and the cheese factory or may walk up the moraine to see the spectacular ice faces and tumbling glaciers of Langtang Lirung or ascend Kyanjin Ri (4350m) and Tserko Ri (5,000m), which is the highest point of this trek. Hike easy for a breath-taking panorama of the Langtang Lirung, Langtang range, Kinshung, Yansa Tsenji. We also have options to make a side trip to Langshisa Kharka. There are several alternatives sided trips, the surrounding areas of North having many smaller isolated valleys. Spend your night back to the Kyanjin.

On this day, you will trek about six to seven hours in order to reach Nyengang Kharka. You will pass by many beautiful villages. You will have to walk through a steep ascend and will be cherished by the natural vegetation of the surrounding area. As there are no houses or lodges found in this area, you need to stay overnight at camp. The trail goes on ascending and the area is covered with little natural vegetation. No villages can be seen in this area, hence no lodges are available.

Today is the shortest day among the whole trek. On this day, we will be ascending towards the High camp. The walk is about three to four hours and is a bit steeper. Upon arrival at High camp, explore around the area and camp overnight.

The trail continues south, following streams and moraines and climbs steeply towards the pass. The path makes a final steep ascent to the pass, from the pass the trail descends steeply and enters the Yangri Khola Valley. It’d be a strenuous day since crossing Ganja La is one of the steep passes. On the Ganja la pass, you can find it covered with snowy ice most of the times throughout the year. Make the long ascent through the boulders, pass the small lakes, and submit the Ganja La which situated on a rocky moraine. The pass provides a majestic panoramic view of the Langtang Lirung and the snowy summits of the Tibetan border. Climbing up and down the pass can sometimes be tricky due to snowfall and ice. Following the stream through grassy meadows, the trail reaches Keldang where we will set our camp.

On this day, you will walk along the ridges and grassland. You will have an amazing view of Mountains today. You will walk through a forest, which will be an adventurous experience to you. Though the walk is long but it is worth trekking as you will be amazed by the natural beauty of this village. You will camp overnight at Dukpu. 6-7 hours trek.

From, Dukpu the trail descends, and then do a climb to a pass. The views from Pass are spectacular towards the Annapurna Region, Mt. Everest region as well and native mountains. The trail descends through the forest with pine and rhododendron and then drops steeply to Gekye Gompa. Its steep descent is passing tiny herders to the settlement of Tarkeghyang. You can visit one of the oldest Buddhist monastery and picturesque Sherpa villages

Today the trail is quite easy through a flat land with beautiful forests. The path leads us to cross small forest with the view of the charming village of Helambu region. The trail makes a sweep around the wide valley end between Parachin and Sherpa village of Gangyul of Khumbu region. Sermathang is another pretty Sherpa village where you can visit many ancient monasteries and view of Jugal Himal range. In the bright day, the village provides excellent views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Gosaikunda, and Rolwaling; even Everest also in the distance.

After breakfast, the trail gradually descends all the way to Melamchi Bazaar through meadows and cultivated fields. From here take a drive.

Leisure day at Kathmandu followed by farewell dinner & celebration. You can ask your guide to take you on a sightseeing trip inside Kathmandu Valley. On this day you can go to the various museums around the valley including the Narayanhiti Museum which earlier used to be the residence of the last king of Nepal. You may also go to the hilltop of Nagarkot. After some sightseeing around the world heritage sites in the valley, you will have a farewell dinner and enjoy with your Nepali friends and guide.
